Doug's Leland's Background

Doug Leland, Executive Coach and Guide to the Sacred DanceDOUG LELAND is an Executive Coach, team development facilitator, health enthusiast, and author. Since 1998, Doug has been coaching executives, corporate managers, professionals, business owners, and individuals in transition . . . guiding each to live their greatest gift for the greatest good.

Coaching Expertise

DOUG ENTERED THE COACHING profession in 1998. He is a graduate of Coach University and is a credentialed Master Certified Coach with the International Coach Federation (ICF). He is a member of ICF and participant in CAM (Conversation Among Masters) an invitation-only gathering of Master coaches.

Doug is a longstanding affiliate of the Pyramid Resource Group (the corporate coaching company) and facilitator of Pyramid’s time- tested and results-proven team development program, Team Advantage.

In addition, Doug is a certified retirement coach and facilitator of the Retirement Success Profile (RSP).

Supported by more than 3,500 hours of coaching experience, Doug offers unique expertise and insight to those in the healthcare industry and/or individuals seeking a pathway to balance and fulfillment through the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Professional Experience

BEFORE ENTERING THE COACHING field, Doug gained leadership and life experience as a Naval Officer and healthcare executive. During his more than 15 years in healthcare, Doug served in staff and line positions, with the last 10 years in senior level marketing positions. He has executive staff and Board of Director experience in both for-profit and not-for-profit environments.

In collaboration with two healthcare industry colleagues, Doug founded URAC, a Washington DC not-for-profit organization that enjoys uniquely broad healthcare industry support for its continued efforts in promoting cost effective, high quality healthcare delivery. This is achieved through accreditation of processes and organizations that interface with healthcare consumers, including hospital, physician, pharmaceutical, and administrative interfaces. Doug also co-founded the Maine Health Management Coalition and the Maine Health Maintenance Organization Coalition.

Health & Wellness Enthusiasm

DOUG IS A LONGTIME advocate for a reasonable, responsible, and sustainable approach to healthy living. Starting as a competitive distance runner completing events from 880 yards to 50 miles, Doug continues to embrace routines and activities that promote health and wellness as a gateway to a balanced and fulfilled life.

In recent years, Doug and his wife, Sally, walked across the United States to promote health and fitness in conjunction with a nationally-sponsored event. In addition, of late, Doug became the first ever to cycle an ElliptiGo from Canada to Mexico, and solo kayaked the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in Maine. More events are planned, but Doug insists that healthy living has little to do with athleticism or occasional special events and everything to do with sensible daily living. Leading a balanced and fulfilled life is accessible and available to all, and often—most often—begins with attention to daily routines that promote health and wellness.

Personal Background

Doug was born in Burlington, Vermont and in 2012 returned to his roots with Sally, his wife of almost 40 years. Doug and Sally have two children, both grown and off creating their own lives.

Doug is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and received a Masters in Business Administration from Northeastern University’s Executive MBA program. In 1996, he completed the yearlong Leadership Maine program.

Doug is author of two books, Somewhere Between Here and There – Memoirs for Navigating Life and ‘Alone’ on the Allagash – A Journey of Mind, Body, and Spirit on a Classic American Waterway. For almost 15 years, Doug has written a weekly essay, Monday Message, which is available at no charge at this Web site or through opt-in subscription.

When not coaching individuals or facilitating team workshops, Doug can usually be found cycling, practicing yoga, reading, composing his weekly Monday Message essay, working with the landscape, walking back roads, camping in beautiful places, or catching up on life with the beauty who caught his eye more than 40 years ago.
